KOCHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a notice to the CPM Thrissur district secretary in the Karuvannur bank fraud case. The ED issued the notice to Thrissur district secretary MM Varghese asking him to appear for questioning on Wednesday. However, MM Varghese responded that he did not receive a summons from the ED. He said that he will decide on appearing before the ED after consulting with the party.
Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that strong action would be taken in connection with the Karuvannur bank fraud case. The Prime Minister also said that the money seized by the ED would be returned to the depositors. Modi made the assurance during the dialogue he had with BJP workers in Kerala.
Following this, the ED handed over the details regarding CPM's secret accounts to the Election Commission, the Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank. The CPM has five secret accounts in the Karuvannur Bank. ED found that these accounts were opened in violation of Co-operative Bank rules.
