NEW DELHI: In Andhra Pradesh, PCC President and daughter of former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, YS Sharmila will contest for the Lok Sabha from Kadapa. AICC General Secretary Tariq Anwar has also been fielded as a candidate in Bihar's Katihar. The party released the list of 17 candidates including Odisha (8), Andhra Pradesh (5), Bihar (3) and West Bengal (1). With this, the number of candidates announced so far has increased to 228.
Candidates have been declared in 114 assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and 49 constituencies in Odisha where assembly elections are being held. Sitting MP Muhammad Javed will contest from Kishanganj in Bihar, MLA Ajit Sharma from Bhagalpur and former Union Minister MM Pallam Raju from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. The candidates are Dr Munish Tamang in West Bengal's Darjeeling and former Bargadilal MP Sanjay Bho in Odisha. Congress is contesting the elections to the 175-member Andhra Legislative Assembly in alliance with CPM and CPI parties.
YSR's own Kadapa
Kadapa was the constituency represented by former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Sharmila's father late YS Rajasekhara Reddy from 1989 to 1999. Kadapa was once a stronghold of the Congress. Sharmila, who recently joined the party, is working on reviving the Congress, which became ashes in Andhra after the last election.
Avinash Reddy, a relative of Sharmila and a member of the YSR Congress Party, is the current MP from Kadapa. Sharmila came to the Congress after falling out with her brother and Andhra Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy. The high command made her the state president later.
