ALAPPUZHA: Various symbols ranging from watermelon to needle and thread are available for independent candidates, with around 190 symbols approved by the Election Commission. The list features an array of items, including vegetables, sweets, cameras, mobile phones, headphones and chargers.

Symbols in the list include cauliflower, green chilies, a basket full of fruit and curries in bowls, all arranged in English alphabetical order. Other symbols encompass a safety pin, cupboard, balloon, hoop, bat, blackboard, bottle, box, footwear and calculator.

Recognized national and regional parties do not require independent symbols, as they campaign under their own symbols approved by the commission. Independent candidates may request a symbol of their choice, but if the same symbol is requested by multiple candidates, it is customary to draw lots. The symbol will be allocated only after the last day for withdrawal of forms.
