12 dead, several injured after bus falls into pit in Chhattisgarh

RAIPUR: At least 12 people died and 14 injured after a bus plunged into a 50-foot-deep mining pit at Durg in Chhattisgarh. There were 40 passengers on the bus.

The accident happened on Tuesday night. The bus was carrying employees of a private distillery company after their work hours. The incident took place at Khapri village under Khumbari police station limits at around 8.30 pm. Three women are among the dead.

The bus fell into the 50-foot-deep pit left after collecting construction material from the mine. The rescue operation was coordinated by the state disaster management force and the police. The collector said that 12 of the injured have been shifted to AIIMS in Raipur and the rest to a private hospital.

The collector said that a magistrate-level inquiry will be conducted into the incident. President and Prime Minister condoled the accident. The Prime Minister announced that the families of the deceased will be given financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each. Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured.
