PALAKKAD: The price of chicken is moving towards an all-time high in the state. The price of one kg of chicken meat has risen to Rs 260. One kg of chicken costs between Rs 180 and 190. The price of chicken increased by Rs 80 within one week. Lower production of broiler chickens in the state due to hot weather and significantly lower arrivals from Tamil Nadu have led to a rise in price. It is said that chicken meat prices may increase further in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, traders are saying that poultry farms are creating artificial shortages and that the price hike is significantly hurting commoners and hoteliers.
The significant reduction in the production of broiler chickens in the state has led to the rise in prices. One kilogram of chicken meat costs Rs 250–260, one kilogram of beef costs Rs 360–380, and one kilogram of mutton costs Rs 780–800.
Tamil Nadu lobbies raise prices during times of low production in Kerala. In Kerala, those running poultry farms have to spend Rs 90-100 for producing one kg of chicken. However, the cost of production is much less in Tamil Nadu. With the rise in the price of chicken, the price of chicken dishes in restaurants is also increasing.
