THODUPUZHA: With rising cases of food poisoning inside the municipality limit, the health department went for a lightning inspection in five eateries within the city limits. The inspection started on Saturday at 8 am.

50 kg of cooked stale chicken was seized from Hotel Kaifan in Mangattukavala and stale noodles, beef and chicken from Ceylon Hotel in Pulimootil Kavala. These firms were fined and issued show-cause notices.

Municipal Chairman Saneesh George and Secretary Bijumon Jacob hinted about similar inspections in the coming days and warned about strict actions if found fault in hygiene and waste management.

On Saturday, more than 30 people who attended a wedding reception in Malappuram Vallikkunnu were infected with jaundice. Many are still undergoing treatment in various hospitals. The infected people had earlier attended a reception held at an auditorium Kootmuchi Cherali Road. A few months ago, some people who attended a wedding reception held in the same auditorium suffered similar symptoms. But during that time, the auditorium owners shrewdly kept the information confidential.
