Modi, first prime minister of India to feature on New York based Newsweek Magazine after Indira Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has featured on the cover page of New York-based Newsweek magazine. Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to feature on its cover after Indira Gandhi. Her picture appeared on the cover page of the magazine’s April 1966 issue.

In an interview with Newsweek, Modi faced questions centered on the India-China border situation, the Ram Temple and Article 370. This interview was prepared after the Newsweek team had a 90-minute conversation with Modi.

In the interview, Modi said the situation on the India-China border should be addressed urgently to resolve the abnormality in the bilateral interactions. He added that the two countries share a vital relationship and a stable India-China relationship is important to the world.

"Relationship with China is important for India. It is my belief that the lingering situation on our border needs to be resolved as a matter of urgency so that the abnormality in our bilateral interactions can be resolved," the Prime Minister said. He expressed hope that the two countries would be able to restore peace on the border through constructive bilateral engagement.

"A stable and peaceful relationship between India and China is important not only for our two countries but for the world itself. I hope and believe that the relationship can be fostered through constructive bilateral engagement at the diplomatic and military levels. We can restore and maintain peace on our borders," said the Prime Minister.

A clash between the troops of the two countries in the Galwan Valley had deteriorated the relations between India-China in 2020. 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the clashes then. The number of Chinese soldiers killed has not yet been released. After that, there were many discussions at the diplomatic and military level. Speaking about the 2019 Pulwama attack in which 40 Indian soldiers were killed, the Prime Minister also commented on the India-Pak relations in the interview.
