LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government has issued instructions to drivers in view of the increasing number of road accidents and the number of lives lost on the roads. There is an increase of 4.7 percent in the accident rate compared to the previous year. Based on this, the transport department is advising the drivers of vehicles such as buses and trucks to place a family photo in front of their driving seat.
The transport department believes that when a family photo is placed in front of the driving seat, drivers will be reminded of the family and thereby reduce accidents due to carelessness. Transport Commissioner Chandra Bhushan Singh said that all buses and private vehicles in the state should keep the picture of the family on the dash board. A letter has been sent to RTOs, ARTOs and Deputy Transport Commissioners to ensure this.
The government intends to implement the new proposal in a phased manner. This experiment was conducted earlier in Andhra Pradesh. Transport Principal Secretary L. Venkateshwarlu told the media that the idea was taken from here. Accident rates have come down in Andhra Pradesh since the concept was implemented. That is why Uttar Pradesh has taken a similar step.
22,595 people died in road accidents in UP in 2022. In 2023, the number of people who died in road accidents increased to 23,652. According to the statistics of the transport department, 40 percent of the accidents happen due to excessive speed. 12 percent of accidents occur due to wrong-way driving. According to the data released by the Transport Department, 10 percent of accidents have occurred in the state due to the use of mobile phones.
