NEW DELHI: A decision has been taken to announce the candidates within 24 hours in Amethi and Rae Bareli, which were traditionally monopoly constituencies of the Congress, especially the Gandhi family. The leadership has decided to end the suspense in both constituencies immediately.
Jairam Ramesh informed that the central election committee has entrusted party president Mallikarjun Kharge to choose the candidates. He said that the announcement will be made within 24 hours. He said that nobody is scared and no one is running away.
The party did not reveal the candidates for Amethi and Raebareli when it announced the candidates the other day. Congress sources said that discussions are in progress with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in this regard.
Rahul Gandhi lost to Union Minister Smriti Irani in Amethi in 2019. He contested and won from Wayanad and went to the Lok Sabha. This time too Rahul Gandhi had contested from Wayanad.
Sonia Gandhi has been winning from Raebareli since 2004. Sonia is not in the competition this time due to ill health. Her daughter Priyanka Gandhi is likely to contest. Priyanka's husband Robert Vadra's name is also heard in Amethi where Rahul Gandhi contested.
