NEW DELHI: The parents of a woman who died after taking the Covishield vaccine have started legal proceedings against the Serum Institute of India (SII). The company disclosed on Tuesday that the COVID-19 vaccine AZD1222 (Covishield in India) manufactured by AstraZeneca, a UK drug manufacturing company, causes serious side effects. Developed jointly by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, Covishield is manufactured by SII in India.

Venugopalan Govindan, father of Karunya who died in July 2021, aid AstraZeneca's admission was "too late'.

However, the national committee formed by the government has reported that it cannot be confirmed that the vaccine caused Karunya's death. Following this, Govindan filed a writ petition demanding the formation of an independent medical board to conduct an inquiry into the death of his daughter. The petition also demands compensation for the death of her daughter.

AstraZeneca has stated in the UK High Court that the Covishield vaccine can cause strokes and heart attacks. The company also said that there is a possibility of a medical condition called TTS (Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome) in which the blood clots and the number of platelets in the blood decreases. This is the first time the company has admitted that Covishield has side effects.
