NEW DELHI: An ISIS couple, who planned to carry out 100 blasts in the national capital in a single day, were found guilty by the court. Jammu and Kashmir native Jahanjeb Sami and his wife Hina Bashir Baig were the ones who tried to establish a caliphate in the country by establishing a relationship with ISIS. For this, the couple devised a plan to carry out 100 blasts in Delhi in a single day.
Sami is a BTech and MBA graduate. He came to Delhi while working for a British company. Hina Baig holds a degree in Computer Applications and an MBA. After the Indian Parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill, both Sami and Hina mostly stayed indoors. During this time, they contacted ISIS leaders in Afghanistan and Syria online and began acting on their instructions. Hina worked under the names Hannabee and Katijah al Kashmiri in the cyber world. Sami worked under the names Saib, Abu Abdullah and Abdullah Muhammad Al-Hind.
Although the couple started their terrorist activities in 2019, they were immediately discovered by the anti-terrorist squad of the Delhi Police. On March 8, 2020, the two were arrested. The case was later handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Four years later, the court found both of them guilty. On Monday, Sami was sentenced to varying sentences of three to 20 years on charges of attempting to establish a caliphate and plotting to carry out 100 blasts in a single day in Delhi. Baig was awarded two sentences of seven years each.
