KANNUR: As per the revenue data of Southern Railway, Kannur and Kasaragod railway stations are among the top revenue generating station. Kannur was ranked 16th with an income of more than Rs 113 crores 33 lakhs in the year 2023-24.Kannur is the 7th highest revenue generating station in the state.

Thalassery Railway Station is ranked 36th according to Southern Railway with a revenue above Rs 39 Crores 37 lakhs. The station is also ranked 16th in the state. Payyannur is ranked 41st with an income of over Rs 23 crores 71 lakhs.

But the railway stations in Malabar are lagging far behind in terms of infrastructure despite being ahead in terms of revenue. Kannur, Payyannur, Thalassery and Mahe stations were renovated a few months ago after years of complaints. The renovation works are being carried out under the Amrit Bharat scheme.

Due to the narrowness of the current footpath, passengers face a lot of difficulty when more trains arrive. In this situation, the decision is to build a wide footbridge. There is a need for quick completion of the work.

Rs 31.34 crore development in Kannur

Development works worth Rs 31.34 crore are being implemented at the railway station. An amount of Rs 13.77 crore has been sanctioned for new footbridge, lift and escalator and Rs 17.57 crore for additional infrastructure including more parking facility in the railway station premises and a new booking office at the east gate. With this, the complaints of passengers for years will be solved.

Kasaragod isn't far behind

Kasaragod is ranked 33rd in terms of revenue among Southern Railway stations and generates an income of more than Rs 47 crores. The station is also ranked 15th in the state. The arrival of Vande Bharat has increased the income of Kasaragod station. Under Southern Railway, Kanhangad station is ranked 58th and 25th in the state with a revenue of more than Rs 10 crores 21 lakhs.
