Orange and yellow alerts for five-day rain forecast; Possibility of red alert intensity rainfall in some districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Central Meteorological Department has issued orange and yellow alerts for the next 5 days of rain probability forecast for the next 5 days.

Orange Alert

17-05-2024 : Malappuram, Wayanad

18-05-2024 : Palakkad, Malappuram

19-05-2024 : Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki

20-05-2024 : Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki

21-05-2024 : Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki

Chance of isolated heavy rain is forecast. The Central Meteorological Department defines Very Heavy Rainfall as rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

Although orange alert has been issued in some districts on May 20 and 21, 2024, the probability of rain similar to red alert is predicted.

The Central Meteorological Department has declared yellow alert in the districts. Chance of isolated heavy rain is forecast. Heavy rainfall is defined by the Central Meteorological Department as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Thunderstorms are expected. Thunderstorms accompanying summer rains are dangerous.

Special instructions to the public

People living in danger zones should be careful as the storm surge is likely to be strong along various coasts.

At the necessary stage, you should move. Fishing conditions should be kept safe.

Residents of unsecured homes and those living in homes with weak roofs should be prepared to evacuate based on the warnings in the coming days.

Trees/posts/boards etc. standing in danger in private and public areas should be secured and trees should be trimmed. Dangerous conditions should be brought to the attention of the authorities.

In case of heavy rains, under no circumstances should one cross rivers, enter rivers or other bodies of water for bathing, fishing or other purposes.

Viewing, taking selfies or congregating on the overpasses above the water bodies is not allowed.

Residents living downstream of dams should make preparations to anticipate the possibility of water overflowing from the dams and evacuate if necessary as directed by the authorities.

Avoid night travel to hilly areas completely. It is also important to be aware of the dangers of trees falling down in the wind and posts collapsing.
