Kallarkutty and Pambla dams opened due to heavy rain; warning issued for nearby residents

THODUPUZHA: The shutters of both the Kallarkutty and Pambla dams were opened on Saturday due to heavy rains in the catchment areas. The District Collector permitted to open the dam after 6 am on Saturday. 300 cubic feet of water per second will be released from Kallarkutty Dam while 600 cubic feet of water per second will be released from Pambla Dam.

People living on the banks of both the Muthirapuzha River and Periyar have been alerted about the situation. Meanwhile, rains are still heavy in many parts of the state. The weather department has warned about the possibility of heavy rain in isolated places. Seven districts are on yellow alert today. Rain warnings have been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

There is a possibility of high waves and sea damage along the Kerala coast and fishermen have been warned not to go into the sea. Vigilance should also be continued in hilly areas. A cyclone is prevailing over South Kerala and as a result, the rains will be heavy.
