Thunderstorm likely in the state for the next five days; Warning

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is a possibility of rain in the state for the next five days. The Central Meteorological Department has also warned that there is a possibility of heavy rain in isolated places from today to Monday. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are also likely as the cyclone prevails over South Kerala.

Due to heavy rain, the Kallarkutty and Pambla dams were opened this morning. The dams were opened at six o'clock in the morning with the permission of the District Collector. 300 cubic feet of water per second will be released from Kallarkutty Dam and 600 cubic feet of water per second will be released from Pambla Dam. People on both sides of the Muthirappuzhayar and Periyar rivers have been alerted.

Meanwhile, rains remain heavy in many parts of the state today. The weather department has warned that there is a possibility of heavy rain in isolated places. Seven districts are on yellow alert today. Rain warnings have been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

There is a possibility of high waves and sea damage along the Kerala coast and fishermen have been warned not to go into the sea. Vigilance should also be maintained in hilly areas. A cyclone is prevailing over South Kerala which is expected to result in heavy rains.
