Govt likely to back out of promises given to bar owners

kk

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the wake of the bar bribery controversy, the government may back out of the assurances given to bar owners' association leaders, including scrapping the dry days and allowing bars in IT Park. On June 13, the government is scheduled to meet with representatives from the liquor distribution companies and the bar owners' organization. It was planned to change the liquor policy after this discussion.

Any changes to the government's liquor policy will be interpreted as official confirmation of the bribery allegation. As a result, the government intends to postpone the decision. There are also indications that someone may release more evidence of the bribery allegations. Making decisions on changing the liquor policy can cause trouble if the central agencies come to investigate in the future.

The other day, the legislative subject committee had considered the amendment to allow the sale of alcohol in IT parks. The Committee of Secretaries chaired by the Chief Secretary had also recommended a change in the liquor policy.

The bar bribery controversy started after a voice message sent through WhatsApp by Bar owners' organization leader Animon to the bar owners in Idukki was released by a private channel. In the voice message, Animon can be heard demanding bar owners to contribute Rs 2.50 lakhs each to a fundraiser.
