NEW YORK: Reports of 90 feet long asteroid coming towards Earth. It travels at a speed of 29,961 km per hour. The asteroid, named 2024KA1, will make a close approach to Earth at 4.36 IST. According to NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), the asteroid comes within 1.8 million kilometers of Earth.
No immediate threat
Despite its huge size, experts say it poses no direct threat to Earth. It does not affect Near Earth Objects (NEO). However, there is a subset of asteroids known as asteroids (PHAs) that require further scrutiny.
NEOs are continuously monitored, including by NASA and amateur astronomers. It also examines its dangers. The information gained from these observations helps track asteroids like 2024 KA1.
Radar projects such as the Goldstone Solar System Radar Group at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) provide insights into the structure and motion of NEOs.
In just a few days, the roughly 84-foot-sized asteroid 2024 LC will pass by at a speed of about 4,703,168 km/h. On June 11, two more asteroids will come close to Earth. Asteroid 2024 LD, about 67 feet in size, will pass within about 4,635,552 km of Earth and asteroid 2024 CR9, about 1,400 feet in size, will come within about 7,371,520 km of Earth.
