KOCHI: Over 338 inmates of a flat at Kakkanad in Kochi are suffering from vomiting and diarrhea. The Flat Owners Association said that it is suspected that the disease may have been contracted from drinking water. This can be confirmed only after getting the detailed report. The residents of the flat use water from Kerala Water Authority connection, rainwater harvesting, borewell, well and tanker.

The symptoms started during May end. The residents said that they complained to the office of the health minister and the authorities came yesterday. Residents of the flat said more than 500 people are suspected to have been infected.

Health Minister Veena George said the inmates called yesterday and informed her the issue. Immediately informed the DHS. Most of them sought treatment in private hospitals. The health department was not informed this. The health authorities had taken stock of the situation and collected the water samples. They communicated with the residents. The problem is due to the lack of access to clean drinking water. The health department is taking the matter seriously. According to the report of the health department, 340 people have been affected by the disease. Five people are under treatment. The minister also said that awareness activities have been started.
