KSEB's ignorance is costing lives, eight deaths so far this year

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSEB's laxity in taking action despite getting information about power lines in dangerous condition is costing precious lives. It is alleged that KSEB, which educates the people about the dangers of electricity, often ignores the complaints of the people.

The fourth electrical accident death in two months occurred in Kolla in Parassala on Saturday. An individual named Babu died due to shock from a snapped power line. There is allegation that no action was taken by KSEB despite being told about the snapped line. Last month there were accidental deaths at two places in Kollam and Kozhikode's Kuttikattoor. KSEB allegedly ignored the warning given by the people in all the three places.

The guidelines of the Central Electricity Authority are that if there is a possibility of danger in the power line, it should be remedied immediately. The team is headed by a safety commissioner to ensure compliance. Employees are also provided with a 14-item safety kit. Yet there is often delay in taking timely action.

Device to avoid accidents

  • The power minister's office says that the distribution system is being reformed under the name 'Dyuti' to avoid electrical accidents.
  • While giving new connections, an ELCB device will be fitted on the line
  • This is a system that automatically stops power supply even if the line is broken or there is a leak
  • Renovation of power line to cable is also underway
