THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has taken a suo moto case and sent a notice to the authorities in the incident of the sanitation worker going missing while cleaning the Amayizhanjan Canal in the capital city.

Acting chairperson and judicial member of the commission K Baiju Nath demanded the district collector and corporation secretary to submit a report in seven days. The case will be considered in the next sitting at the office of the commission.

The accident happened to Joy, an employee of the company contracted by the railways to clean the canal. It is said that the cleaning took place without any security arrangements. There are also reports that there is a dispute between the railways and the corporation over the cleaning of the Amayizhanjan canal, where tons of garbage are piled up. Garbage heaps have become a challenge even for rescue missions. The action is taken in the suo moto case registered by the commission on the basis of a newspaper report.

Meantime, the search operation to find Joy is still continuing. Navy will also arrive for the search. Reports said they will reach the capital by evening. A 30-member team including divers under the leadership of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) is presently carrying out the rescue operation. Along with this, the operation using the robot will also continue. The NDRF team said the mud and garbage have been accumulated in the canal.
