AMBALAPUZHA: A 78-year-old man, P D Gopidas, has become the oldest Plus One equivalency examinee in the state as he continues his pursuit of a law degree. Gopidas, from Punnapravadakk Thannipallichira, attended the exam at K K Kunjupillai Memorial Government HSS in Ambalapuzha. He originally completed his studies at St. Joseph's High School, Paravur, up to the 6th standard.

Gopidas has had a diverse career, working as a rope factory worker, a beedi worker and later as a security guard. After retiring at 65, he lived with his children following the death of his wife Indira twelve years ago. He has two married daughters, Samasya and Anisha and currently lives with Anisha, who is employed with Consumerfed.

Inspired by his mother's old wish for him to pass the 10th standard, Gopidas decided to resume his education after retiring. With the support of his children, he enrolled at K K Kunjupilla Memorial Government HSS for 7th class equivalency studies and successfully passed the 10th class examination with A plus in 3 subjects.

Motivated by a speech from Block Panchayat President Adv. Sheeba Rakesh at a school felicitation ceremony, Gopidas aspired to continue his studies through Plus Two and then pursue a law degree. Although he initially failed the English exam in 2022 and was unable to take the exam in 2023 due to illness, he returned this year to sit for the Plus One exam.

Also present at the examination was Ashiq, the youngest student in the state at 21 years old. Both Gopidas and Ashiq were honoured by Zilla Panchayat President K G Rajeshwari and other prominent figures.
