KOCHI: The High Court opinioned that throwing garbage in canals is a pastime for some people. The court also said that such people should be prosecuted. Justice Devan Ramachandran made strong criticism while considering cases related to garbage problems in Kochi.
The court also asked why the corporation is not able to prevent the return of garbage to the cleaned canals of Kochi. The High Court asked how many cases have been taken so far against those who threw garbage in the canal. A situation where the cleaned canals have to be re-cleaned cannot be allowed. The local government bodies are failing in this regard. Once the canal is cleaned, the authorities should take steps to protect it. Otherwise, it shows the failure of governance systems. Tons of garbage can be seen under the Rainbow Bridge on Marine Drive.
It is the responsibility of the local bodies and the government to identify those who throw waste and take exemplary action. Such incidents are repeated because of its absence. The court also stated that this cannot be allowed anymore. The High Court also complimented the fire rescue personnel who went down to search in the garbage-filled creek to bring Joy out of Amayizhanchan canal.
