'Opened kitchen door hearing sounds, and then.. '; shocking reports from Wayanad

KALPETTA: Hospitals in Wayanad and Kozhikode are witnessing heartbreaking scenes on Tuesday. At least 26 dead bodies have reached the Meppadi health centre in Wayanad before Tuesday noon. These include the bodies of twelve women, thirteen men and one child. It is reported that all the dead bodies are from Chooralmala. Only six among the 26 bodies have been identified so far.

In the meantime, many people are rushing to the hospital in tears to check for their missing relatives among the corpses. One woman who rushed to the hospital said that five of her relatives including two children were missing.

"There was an orange alert here for about two days. Nobody took it seriously and authorities failed to move people to safer places” said one resident.

Around 70 people are currently undergoing treatment at Meppadi Wims Hospital. There are also reports of five deaths but one only among the body has been identified.

“All our family members were saved. It was midnight and I heard some sounds. When opened the kitchen door, water rushed inside ferociously. I held my children but failed to close the door. In the impact, I lost hold of my children. We all went inside the water and it was darkness everywhere. Later my brothers helped me out and we all moved to a nearby house and changed dress. It was there we noticed a cut on my daughter’s head. We were dressing the wound when another landslide occurred.

All my children were put to sleep on the bed and berth but shockingly, the other five people who were with us went missing.” Said one woman who survived the disaster.
