NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed CPM member John Brittas and Muslim League member Harris Biran in the Rajya Sabha that the Kannur International Airport cannot be given the status of point of call which will enable it to facilitate the operation of services in collaboration with foreign countries. Instead, steps will be taken to conduct more international flights, both direct and indirect, the minister said.
At the same time, John Brittas pointed out that the central government's stance is a continuation of neglect towards the Kannur airport. "The government is taking a different approach to other airports on the point of call rules. The central government says that the status is given using the names of the cities. Dabolim and Manohar airports have been given the title of 'Goa city' even though they are in the state of Goa. The Kannur airport can be given the title by connecting it to the neighbouring city of Kozhikode," Brittas pointed out.
