Extensive search begins in Wayanad; 131 still missing, search dividing disaster zone into six

KALPETTA: An extensive search by the people has started in Wayanad where the landslide struck. The search is after dividing the disaster zone into six. The search also includes people staying in relief camps and in relatives’ houses. They were sent to disaster areas along with the security personnel.


It is reported that voluntary organizations will also be part of the people search. Reports said the search will be till 11 am today. An extensive search is likely to be conducted on Sunday. More than four hundred people have died in the disaster. 131 people are still missing.


Mundakkai in red category
Wayanad South DFO Ajith K Raman told a media that Mundakkai belongs to thee red category. He said that the illegal construction works in Chooralmala and Mundakkai have caused landslides and a report was given in 2023 mentioning all these things. Building construction in these areas should be controlled. He also demanded that resorts operating without NOC should be stopped immediately.


Meantime, a central team is coming to Wayanad today to assess the situation in the disaster-affected areas. The team headed by Union Home Minister's Joint Secretary Rajeev Kumar is coming. The team will hold a discussion with the government representatives at 3:30 pm. The Prime Minister is visiting Wayanad tomorrow.
