DINDIGUL: Thousands participated in a crowdfunding event in Tamil Nadu to support the victims of the Wayanad disaster. The event, called "Moi Virundhu," took place in Dindigul and is rooted in an age-old tradition in Tamil Nadu. Moi Virundhu is a ceremony where the public is invited to a gathering and attendees contribute money by placing it in a box or on a banana leaf after a meal.
A unique aspect of this event is that donations are entirely voluntary, with people contributing as much or as little as they wish. In Dindigul, people from various walks of life came together for the cause. The event was organized by Mujibur Rahman, who hosted the Moi Virundhu at his hotel.
Mujibur served biryani to all who attended the Virundhu. Contributions started from as little as Rs. 10, with people donating generously according to their means.
After hearing about the tragedy in Wayanad, Mujibur announced the biryani fest on social media as a means of crowdfunding, promising that all proceeds would go to the Wayanad relief effort. He initially estimated that he could raise a maximum of Rs. 1.25 lakhs on his own. However, he believed that with the support of the entire Dindigul community, a much larger amount could be collected. Mujibur noted that while the exact amount of aid to be delivered has yet to be determined, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
