Rains to intensify in Kerala for five days; orange and yellow alerts issued

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain for the next five days. The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts in various districts.

Orange alert
13/08/2024: Pathanamthitta, Idukki
14/08/2024: Ernakulam, Thrissur
15/08/2024: Idukki

A chance of heavy rain at isolated places is predicted here. The IMD has defined very heavy rainfall as rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

Yellow alert

13/08/2024: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur

14/08/2024: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

15/08/2024: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

16/08/2024: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

17/08/2024: Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur

Isolated heavy rain is predicted in these districts. Heavy rainfall is defined by the IMD as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Thunderstorms are expected.

Special instructions to public
People living in danger zones should be cautious as there is a possibility of severe storm surge along various coasts. At the necessary stage, you should move. Fishing equipment should be kept safe.

Residents of unsecured homes and those living in homes with weak roofs should be prepared to evacuate based on the warnings in the coming days.

Trees/posts/boards etc. standing in danger in private and public areas should be secured and trees should be trimmed. Dangerous conditions should be brought to the attention of the authorities.

In the event of heavy rains, under no circumstances should one cross river, enter rivers or other bodies of water for bathing, fishing or other purposes.

Viewing, taking selfies or congregating on the overpasses above water bodies is not allowed.

People living downstream of the dams should make preparations in anticipation of the possibility of water overflowing from the dams and evacuate, if necessary, as per the instructions of the authorities.
