Shawarma claims life of teacher, search in hotels

CHENNAI: A 22-year-old woman died of food poisoning after she consumed shawarma. The dead is Shweta, a private school teacher, residing in Thiruveedi Amman Street near Vanagaram. She had eaten shawarma from a fast-food restaurant near Vanagaram when she went out with her brother. On reaching home, she had fish curry.


She later vomited continuously and then fainted. Shweta was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Poroor. She was admitted to Stanley Hospital on Tuesday after her health deteriorated. The police have registered a case and started investigation.


A 14-year-old girl had recently died in Tamil Nadu after eating shawarma. The girl, a native of A S Petta, died near Kalaiyarasi. The girl fell ill after eating shawarma from a hotel at Paramathi in Namakkal. The incident happened last Tuesday. About 42 people who had food from the hotel that day had the same condition. With this, Health Minister Subramaniam had ordered to conduct an emergency inspection in hotels across the state.
