NEW DELHI: Finally, the central government has taken action on the appointment of chief justices of eight high courts, including Kerala. The Centre has issued a notification accepting the recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium.
Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar, a senior judge of the Bombay High Court, has been appointed as the chief justice of the Kerala High Court. Justice Jamdar was born into a family of lawyers in Solapur, Maharashtra. He became a judge of the Bombay High Court on January 23, 2012.
The Centre's stand on the collegium's recommendations was controversial. The collegium had revised the recommendation after the Centre informed it that it had "sensitive" information related to certain names. However, there was no change in the recommendation to appoint Justice Jamdhar as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
The Jharkhand government had filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court over the delay in the appointment of the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. In the notification issued yesterday, the Centre also accepted the recommendation to transfer Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice M S Ramachandra Rao as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand.
