KOLKATA: Ten people, including doctors and interns, have been expelled from the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where a doctor was allegedly raped and murdered. The action was taken by the college authorities based on the report of the institutional enquiry committee appointed after the death of the doctor. Officials said the expelled were those who threatened the students and physically and mentally tortured them. They abused the students and used alcohol and drugs. Among those expelled are doctors, house staff and interns. They include Ashish Pandey, who was arrested by the CBI in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College between 2021 and 2024.
In a meeting of the college council held on Saturday, it was decided to expel those found guilty in the report submitted by the committee. They have been expelled until further notice. There is a demand to conduct an investigation against 49 people apart from them. Following the death of the woman doctor, there were massive protests from students and junior doctors demanding an end to the threat culture on campus.
Junior doctors had started a hunger strike till their deaths, demanding justice for the deceased doctor, taking action for the safety of the doctors and demanding that the Mamata government implement the promises made within 24 hours.
