PALAKKAD: The police have registered a case and started an investigation on the incident in which five people were killed in a collision between a car and a lorry at Kalladikode in Palakkad. The car involved in the accident was over speeded, said Kalladikode circle inspector M Shaheer. He said liquor bottles were recovered from the car and an investigation has started.
The inspector said they will examine whether the passengers were drunk. The initial conclusion of the police is that the excessive speed of the car was the cause of the accident. FIR has been registered. The actual cause of the accident will be clear only after checking the CCTV footage. The footage is also being collected. The driver of the lorry involved in the accident has been taken into custody. Liquor bottles and empty bottles were recovered from the car. The inspector said that the inquest proceedings will start in the morning. The car was pulled out with great effort by the fire force and the police.
The accident happened at the busy Ayyappan Kavu Junction in Kalladikode. The Maruti Sift car in which the residents of Kongad were traveling collided with the lorry. Five people died in the accident. The car, which was coming from Palakkad towards Mannarkkad, hit the lorry which was coming from the opposite direction. Four died on the spot itself. One died while being taken to the hospital. They were taken out after breaking open the car.
The dead are K K Vijesh (35) of Kongad Mannanthara Keezhmuri House, Vishnu (29) of Mannanthara Thottathil House, Ramesh (31) of Veendapara Veendakunnu,
Muhammed Afzal (17) of Manikkasseri Estate Stop have been identified. Vijesh and Vishnu are auto drivers of Kongad Town. The fifth person dead has not been identified. Vishnu is the son of Vijayakumar and Janaki of Mannanthara Velayanthodu. Vijesh is the son of Krishnan and Omana of Keeshmuri House. Ramesh is the son of Chidambaran of Veendapara Veendakunnu. Afzal is of the Mehamood of Manikkasseri Estate Stop. The lorry driver of Tamil Nadu has also sustained injuries.
The accident happened Tuesday night at around 10.45 pm. The car proceeding towards Kozhikode from Palakkad collided with the lorry going to Palakkad from Mannarkkad. The eyewitnesses said the car that overtook another vehicle was at a high speed. It was drizzling at that time. Half of the car crashed into the lorry. The youths hired a car belonging to a native of Karimpuzha and was driving it. The locals who saw the accident called the police, fire force and the ambulance.
