KOCHI: A man has been arrested in connection with an attempt to deposit counterfeit currency notes at a co-operative bank. Sreenath (32), a lottery seller from Kunnukara, was arrested by the Chengamanad police. The lottery seller had come to deposit 11 fake notes of Rs 500 denomination in his account in a co-operative bank. Sreenath left after handing over the money to the bank, but the bank officials got suspicious and informed the police.
Sreenath was nabbed from Gothuruthu by a team led by Inspector Soni Mathai. During interrogation, he told the police that he received the currency from the roadside while selling lottery tickets, following which he tried to deposit the money in the bank. Sreenath, who was produced before the court after registering a case, has now been remanded in judicial custody. The police are preparing to investigate the incident in detail.
The police have received more currency notes from the accused. Police were informed that some of the locals had also received fake notes from the roadside near Kunnukara school on Monday. Everyone got Rs 500 currency notes. According to the police, transactions using counterfeit notes have been rampant in the area for the past few days. The police have launched a probe to trace the source of the fake currency notes.
Besides the circle inspector, the investigation team consists of SIs Satheesh Kumar and Noushad, senior CPOs Kishore and Joy Cherian, CPOs Vibin Das, Ranjith and Vishnu.
