THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, the KSEB is planning to establish state-of-the-art EV charging stations along the national highway, inspired by the popular ‘Take a Break’ model. These centers aim to cater specifically to long-distance travelers, offering a range of facilities to ensure convenience and comfort.

Each center, spanning an area of 1,000 square feet, will be equipped with fast-charging capabilities, relaxation areas, coffee shops, washrooms, restaurant-bakeries, mobile charging stations, Wi-Fi and internet access. KSEB intends to develop these facilities independently and through franchise partnerships. For those interested in taking up a franchise, financial assistance will be available through ANERT (Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technology).

This project marks the first instance in India where a public-sector electricity distribution company has embarked on such an initiative, including the innovative concept of pole-mounted EV charging stations.

The number of EVs in Kerala is expected to rise significantly, reaching 1.5 million by 2030. With each EV consuming approximately 1.5 kilowatts of electricity per kilometer, it is estimated that 2.7 billion units of electricity will be required annually to power these vehicles. In light of this growing demand, KSEB’s hi-tech charging centers will play a vital role in supporting the state’s transition to electric mobility.

To enhance the EV charging infrastructure, KSEB is collaborating with the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a global leader in carbon-free energy solutions. RMI’s Indian branch expressed its interest in partnering with KSEB earlier in August, marking an important milestone in sustainable development for Kerala.
