THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: U R Pradeep and Rahul Mamkootathil, who won the Chelakkara and the Palakkad by-elections respectively, were on Wednesday sworn in as MLAs. The function was held at 12 noon at the R Sankaranarayanan Thampi Members Lounge in the assembly building.
U R Pradeep was the first to take the oath and he took a solemn oath. Rahul Mamkootathil took the oath in the name of God. Rahul is the youngest member of the present Kerala Assembly. Speaker A N Shamseer administered the oath of office. In addition to the chief minister and the leader of the opposition, ministers and MLAs attended the function.
This is the first time Rahul becoming an MLA and Pradeep a second time. Rahul won with a record majority of 18,715 votes. Rahul got a majority more than Shafi Parambil got in the constituency last time. Rahul got 58,244 votes. NDA candidate C Krishnakumar got 39,529 votes and LDF candidate Dr P Sarin got 37,348 votes. Despite being in third place, LDF was able to get more votes than last time.
Pradeep won the Chelakkara constituency by 12,122 votes. In Chelakkara, LDF got 64,877 votes, UDF 52,626 votes and BJP 33,609 votes.
