KANHANGAD: A third-year general nursing student of Manzoor Hospital & School of Nursing tried to hang herself in her hostel room.
The incident happened around 12.40 pm on Saturday. Chaitanya Kumari (20), who is in critical condition, is being treated in an emergency condition at Mangalore Indiana Hospital.
The female students staged a sit-in protest in front of the hospital with serious allegations against the hospital management and the hostel warden in the incident. About 100 girl students from three batches protested. The women students protested on the streets with slogans like "stop the torture of the warden, punish those who tortured Chaitanya, stop the arrogance of money and politics."
The students have alleged that the warden is enforcing strict restrictions such as not providing proper food to the students in the hostel, prohibiting them from calling and talking to their relatives, and not letting them outside as if they were locked in a cage. There are also complaints that the warden did not allow them to study for the exam.
Hosdurg Inspector P Ajith Kumar's police team brought the situation under control.
The hospital authorities told the police that the student was suffering from mental problems as she could not prepare properly for the exam due to her health problems.
Chaitanya, who comes from a poor family, joined the nursing course with the financial help of relatives and locals. Her father and mother, laborers, live in a rented house in Ellukochi.
The representatives of the female students were called to the police station and a discussion was held. The police have called an extensive meeting of the hospital management, student representatives and parents' representatives at 10 am on Monday. The women students ended their protest in front of the hospital on the assurance of the police that everything would be resolved in the meeting.
