KATTAPPANA: Thressiamma (90), the mother of vendor Sabu Thomas, who tragically took his own life in front of the Kattappana Cooperative Society after being refused the return of his deposited money, has passed away due to age-related health issues. She had been bedridden for the past year and a half after suffering a stroke. The funeral will take place today at 4 PM at St. George Church
On December 20, Sabu was found hanging in front of the Kattappana Rural Development Cooperative Society. A suicide note found in Sabu's pocket accused the bank secretary Reji and staff members Binoy and Sujamol of being responsible for his death. Additionally, Sabu's family came forward with strong criticism against the society. The controversy deepened after an audio clip surfaced, allegedly featuring CPM leader VR Saji, the society’s former president. In the recording, Saji was heard defending the accused employees and issuing threats to Sabu. This revelation sparked widespread protests, amplifying public outrage.
Sabu had approached the Kattappana Cooperative Society seeking the return of his money to cover the medical expenses of his mother and wife. Meanwhile, the bank recently returned the deposited amount of Rs 15 lakh (Rs 14,59,940) to his family.
