IDUKKI: MLA MM Mani has made a controversial remark about Sabu Thomas, a vendor who committed suicide in front of the Kattappana Cooperative Society after being denied the return of the money he deposited in the society. Mani stated that an investigation should be conducted to determine whether Sabu had any mental health issues. The MLA made the controversial remark during a clarification meeting held in Kattappana in connection with Sabu’s death.
"We are deeply saddened by Sabu's death. Neither we nor our board or its president have any role in his death. We have done nothing that could be linked to such an outcome. No one should attempt to place the burden of blame on us by making baseless accusations. The CPI(M) is not an organization that will succumb to such attacks. We have the strength to face any situation with dignity. We have no involvement. It must be investigated whether Sabu had any mental health issues, whether he was under treatment, or whether he had consulted a doctor for the same. If anyone attempts to falsely accuse us, it won't be tolerated," said MM Mani.
On December 20, Sabu was found hanging in front of the Kattappana Rural Development Cooperative Society. A suicide note found in Sabu's pocket accused the bank secretary Reji and staff members Binoy and Sujamol of being responsible for his death. Additionally, Sabu's family came forward with strong criticism against the society. The controversy deepened after an audio clip surfaced, allegedly featuring CPM leader VR Saji, the society’s former president. In the recording, Saji was heard defending the accused employees and issuing threats to Sabu. This revelation sparked widespread protests, amplifying public outrage.
