NEW DELHI: The state government requested the Supreme Court to dismiss the petition filed by accused Anu Shanthi seeking bail in the Attingal twin murder case. The state reasserted that Anu Shanti had a definite role in the conspiracy of the crime. The government also termed Anu Shanthi’s allegation of losing eyesight due to police brutality as fake. This was mentioned in the affidavit filed by the state government.
The Supreme Court will consider the petition related to the case tomorrow. Nishe Rajan Shonker, Standing Council of the State, responded to Anu Shanthi’s petition in the Supreme Court. The trial court and the High Court sentenced Anu Shanthi after being convinced of her role in the crime. The affidavit also stated that the accused was sentenced to double life imprisonment based on clear evidence.
In the petition filed in the Supreme Court, Anu Shanthi said that she lost her eyesight due to police brutality and requested clemency as she wanted to get her eyes treated. But the state government called this claim false and said the whole story was a build-up to get a favourable judgement from the court.
In April 2014, Anu Shanthi's four-year-old daughter and mother-in-law were brutally killed. According to the prosecution, Anu Shanthi and her boyfriend Nino Mathew, both employees of Kazhakoottam Technopark, conspired and committed the heinous crime. The death sentence awarded to Nino Mathew by the trial court was reduced to life imprisonment by the Kerala High Court. He was also sentenced to 25 years in prison without parole. High Court upheld Anu Shanthi's double life imprisonment.
