CPM leader K Suresh Kurup called for immediate regulation, to help the student's organisation from going redundant. Kurup, a former SFI leader blamed the suzerainty SFI practices in most colleges and rampant drug usage among its members to have caused the decadence.
Suresh Kurup:
In the past, student organizations and their members were vital for the proper functioning of colleges. As far as I understand, SFI’s despot-like rule in most colleges, clamping down on dissenting voices, are factors that have caused the downfall. In most of the colleges. SFI have no rivals and enjoys total sway. Meanwhile, KSU functions like an alumni association.
The CPM cannot interfere in the day-to-day operations of the SFI except to give a general guideline. But despite their conduct, I don’t have any grudge against SFI and I don't think they are bad. The organisation needs to self-regulate and bring down the usage of drugs.
There is no point in comparing the SFI of old times with the contemporary one. In today’s world, whatever happens inside the college will come out to the public. In olden times, it was not the case. Any heinous conduct will stay inside the campus. There was no way such details coming out.”
Suresh Kurup had requested CPM to drop him from the district committee after facing constant neglect. Congress is trying its best to take the veteran leader to their camp, which they think will serve as a big boost for their campaign ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
