'Despite being a senior player, he did not show any responsibility, stayed away from training camp without providing reason'; KCA against Sanju Samson

KOCHI: The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has responded to the controversies surrounding Malayali cricketer Sanju Samson following his exclusion from India's squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. KCA President Jayesh George revealed that Sanju was not picked for the Kerala team for the Vijay Hazare Trophy as he had opted out of the association’s training camp ahead of the tournament without giving a clear reason.

Reports suggest that Sanju’s absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy—a key domestic tournament for national selection—may have impacted his chances of making the Champions Trophy squad. The situation has drawn criticism, including from Shashi Tharoor MP, who accused the KCA of ruining Sanju’s career due to personal biases. In response, George defended the association’s decision, asserting that Sanju’s actions left them no choice.

“Sanju had sent a one-line email to the KCA Secretary stating his unavailability, but he did not specify any reason. After the camp concluded and the team was announced, he later sent another email indicating his availability. As a senior and responsible player, it is unacceptable to communicate in such a manner without proper explanation. Since he distanced himself from the camp, he was not considered for the team,” George stated.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the BCCI is conducting an inquiry into Sanju’s absence from the tournament without providing a proper explanation.
