Police file chargesheet in CUSAT stampede case; Former principal including three named accused

KOCHI: Police on Sunday filed a chargesheet in the case of a tragic stampede that claimed the lives of four people in the CUSAT Tech Fest event held in 2023. The accused are former principal Deepak Kumar Sahu, and teachers Girish Kumar Thambi and N Biju. They have been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

A team led by Thrikakkara ACP filed the charge sheet in the Kalamassery Magistrate Court. The police decided not to include the registrar and the accused in the case. Three students and a youngster who came to attend the tech fest died in the tragic incident that sent shockwaves across the state.

Atul Thampi (23), son of Thampi in Koothatukulam, Anne Rifta (20), daughter of Roy George Kutty in North Paravur Gothuruth, Sara Thomas from Thamarassery in Kozhikode and Alvin Joseph from Palakkad Mundur died in the tragedy. Alvin is not a student.

The incident that shook Kochi took place on November 23, 2023. The tragedy was caused by a group of students taking to the stage during Dhishna, the Technical fest, of CUSAT. The incident occurred during a program organized by the mechanical department at CUSAT. Around 15 students had fainted in the stampede.
