Sharon murder case: Death sentence for Greeshma, age cannot be considered, says court

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Greeshma of Parasala, the first accused in the Sharon murder case, has been awarded death sentence. Greeshma’s uncle Nirmala Kumaran Nair has been sentenced to three years in prison. A fine of Rs 2 lakh has been imposed on him. Sharon’s parents burst into tears after hearing the verdict. However, the accused did not show any expressions. The court observed that it was the rarest of rare cases.

The quantum of sentence was pronounced by Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court Judge A M Basheer. The hearing was completed in three months. The court lauded the investigating officers. The court pointed that the police had changed the investigation method according to changing times.

Sharon did not want Greeshma to be punished. Even on his deathbed, Sharon loved Greeshma. He did not mention her name even in his death statement. The court observed that whether Sharon had a complaint or not is not relevant here and Greeshma cannot be given age relaxation.

She tried to kill him even during their relationship. Greeshma's act was a betrayal of trust. The verdict also clarified that the attempt to kill was proven. Sharon felt that there was something wrong in the juice she offered. That is why he captured the video. Even on his deathbed, Sharon called Greeshma ‘vave’ The court also pointed out that there is no evidence for Sharon beating the accused.

Greeshma sent a message that should not trust anyone whom you love. The accused called Sharon home saying that they could have sex. Sharon was in the hospital for eleven days without having even a drop of water. Still, he did not mention her name. But she personally attacked Sharon even after his death.

Greeshma's suicide attempt was to divert the investigation. There are 48 circumstantial evidences against Greeshma. She aimed to kill him in stages. It was a planned murder. The court pointed out that there is no law that does not allow the maximum punishment.

Greeshma was seen crying after reaching the courtroom. An unknown person had arrived in the courtroom with the lawyers. The police intervened and sent him out.

The court had found Greeshma and her uncle guilty. The prosecution was able to prove the charges of murder, conspiracy and destruction of evidence against Greeshma. Greeshma's mother Sindhu was acquitted due to want of evidence.

Greeshma's bail was later cancelled and she was taken to Attakulangara Women's Jail. Greeshma was brought to the court today after a medical examination this morning.

Greeshma had given Sharon Raj a drink laced with paraquat, an herbicide, on October 14, 2022 when he visited her at her house. Greeshma decided to kill Sharon, thinking that her relationship with him would hinder her arranged marriage with a soldier. The police had found that Greeshma's mother and uncle supported her. Nirmala Kumaran Nair bought the herbicide for Greeshma.

Sharon died on October 25 in 2022. The case was investigated by a special team led by Thiruvananthapuram Rural SP D Shilpa. The investigation was conducted based solely on circumstantial evidence in the case where there were no eyewitnesses. Digital, forensic and scientific evidence were also crucial.

The trial, which began on October 15, ended on January 3rd. 95 witnesses were examined. Scientific and digital evidence were crucial in the case. Special Public Prosecutor V S Vineeth Kumar, advocates Alfas Madathil and Navaneeth Kumar V S appeared for the prosecution. Sasthamangalam Ajith Kumar is the defence lawyer.

The prosecution had requested the court the other day that Greeshma has the nature of a devil and should be given death penalty. The judge then called the accused into the chamber and enquired things directly. Greeshma requested that the maximum leniency be granted in the sentence considering her age.

Greeshma had informed the court that she still needs to study. She is only 24 years old. She had also informed the court that she has no other criminal background. She also produced her MA certificate and mark list. Greeshma is a postgraduate in English. Sharon Raj was a final year BSc Radiology student at Neyyur Christian College.
