THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Health Minister KK Shailaja has responded to the CAG's findings regarding irregularities in the procurement of PPE kits during the COVID-19 period. She stated that she had already clarified her stance on the matter earlier and that things were explained when the opposition raised the issue before the Lokayukta. She explained that the prices of PPE kits had gone up at the time when there was a scarcity of the kits and that the government was compelled to procure a limited quantity of kits at higher rates to address the urgent need.

"I haven't seen the CAG report. I had previously provided a detailed explanation when the opposition raised this issue in the assembly. Additionally, I clarified the matter when the opposition brought it before the Lokayukta. After the second Pinarayi government assumed office, the Chief Minister provided a clear explanation regarding this issue," said KK Shailaja.

She added, "Amid the rising prices of PPE kits, the government procured lakhs of kits, but only a small portion was purchased at higher rates due to the pressing circumstances. Although an order for 50,000 kits was placed, the full quantity was not delivered. The procurement decisions were based on both quality and necessity. Without examining the CAG report, I cannot provide further comments. The government will respond," she clarified.

The CAG report notes that the government incurred an additional financial burden of Rs 10.23 crore due to the procurement of PPE kits at rates 300% higher than the prevailing market prices. The report highlights that while kits were purchased at Rs 550 each on March 28, 2020, another batch was procured at Rs 1,550 per kit from a different supplier just two days later.
