NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party thought they could effortlessly continue in power by gifting freebies to the public. The same demagoguery won them 62 seats in the last assembly elections and made them popular across the nation. AAP remained adherent to the same freebie scheme in 2025 but the people of Delhi had enough.
This is an unexpected defeat and a nadir for AAP in Delhi. The party that amassed up to 62 seats in the last assembly elections are now teetering with just 22. Their chief Arvind Kejriwal is still trailing. The humiliation is complete. Everything was fueled by the backlash AAP got from South Delhi.
BJP is leading in 11 out of 15 seats in South Delhi. These 15 seats include 10 assembly constituencies in South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency and New Delhi, Greater Kailash, Malviya Nagar, RK Puram and Kasturba Nagar seats. Aam Aadmi had won 14 out of 15 seats in the 2020 elections from this consistency. BJP is storming to power in the national capital, mostly because of the favourable wave they got from South Delhi.
As of now, BJP is leading in 46 seats and AAP in 24 seats. The former deputy CM of Delhi and AAP leader Manish Sisodia has lost from Jangpura seat. Among the constituencies led by the BJP is Delhi Chief Minister Atishi's Kalkaji. BJP has fielded MP Ramesh Bidhuri. Greater Kailash, the stronghold of Delhi minister and Aam Aadmi leader Saurabh Bharadwaj, is another important seat where Aam Aadmi is trailing.
BJP is also leading Malviya Nagar, represented by Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti.
