THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the first time in the country, an artificial intelligence (AI) system will be deployed for drug detection. The AI system is being developed by the Digital University.

Chemical sensors capable of detecting narcotic substances will be installed in hostels, toilets, and other key locations. Each sensor costs Rs 60,000. The Digital University will integrate AI technology into these sensors, enabling them to identify drugs effectively. These sensors, commonly used in industries to detect chemical leaks, will also have the ability to alert authorities automatically.

The new screening system, capable of identifying synthetic drugs, will be ready within three months. The university has appointed a team of AI experts to develop the necessary technological framework.

The Governor has assured financial assistance for anti-drug initiatives. Funds will be sourced from the central government, the University Grants Commission (UGC), and various non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Inability to detect drugs in lab tests

  1. The chemical composition of drugs is frequently altered, making it difficult to detect them in laboratory chemical analysis. Highly potent drugs in powder, granule, or sticker form are being smuggled from foreign countries. Legal cases become weak when these substances go undetected, allowing offenders to escape punishment. Lab authorities requested the university to develop an AI-based detection system to address this issue.
  2. AI-driven drones will be used to detect drug consumption and abnormal behavior. These drones will be programmed with AI to alert the police, excise department, and college authorities. Law enforcement agencies will also be able to utilize these AI-powered drones for monitoring.

"AI will be capable of detecting even the latest synthetic drugs. The algorithm for this will be developed soon."
