THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Six more children from the Child Welfare Committee were admitted to the hospital yesterday. The other children have been admitted to the hospital after a six-month-old baby from the committee died of pneumonia.
The children were admitted to the SAT after experiencing fever, cold and cough. Two of them are experiencing shortness of breath. The children under treatment are between five months and one and a half years old. The hospital authorities said that the health condition of the children is currently satisfactory and that further tests are needed to determine whether the children were affected by an infection.
Two babies had died in the Child Welfare Committee in a month. A six-month-old baby was admitted to the SAT Hospital after experiencing difficulty breathing at 6:30 am on Saturday. The baby died at 9:30 am. The child was admitted to the hospital from February 22 to March 7 due to fever. Doctors were consulted when the fever flared up again. Despite being given medicine, the baby's breathing became worse again on Saturday. The initial conclusion of the postmortem report is that pneumonia was the cause of death.
Health Minister Veena George has sought a report from the Secretary of the Department of Women and Child Development on the incident.
"The children are receiving proper care. Sick children are being treated on time. Children who are sick but do not need to be admitted to the hospital are being cared for separately. The hospital authorities have informed that the condition of the children admitted to the hospital is satisfactory."
