THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vigilance found irregularities worth lakhs in a lightning inspection conducted at the Kazhakoottam sub-registrar's office. The action of the vigilance was based on a complaint received alleging irregularities in connection with a flat and land transaction. The complaint was received based on an incident that took place last month when the sub-registrar was on leave. Initial information is that irregularities worth around Rs 22.40 lakhs were found.
The junior superintendent was in charge when the sub-registrar was on leave. During this time, it is alleged that he had purchased five apartments from a private apartment company levying only one percent tax. The junior superintendent's action was in violation of the rules. An unaccounted amount of Rs 5,550 was also recovered during the inspection. No one has been taken into custody at present. It is learnt that the vigilance team will proceed with the investigation.
The government reportedly lost lakhs due to these registration-related violations. Kazhakoottam, part of Thiruvananthapuram Municipality, has some of the state's priciest land. Many flats, villas, and commercial projects are being built here, leading to increased scrutiny. Officials are checking if more irregularities happened at this office.
