THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: 'The accused slapped her hard on the left cheek. Due to the impact, she fell to the ground. When she got up, he grabbed her right hand and twisted it. He slapped her again on the cheek.' The Vanchiyoor Police's remand report stated that young lawyer Shyamili was subjected to brutal assault by senior lawyer Bailin Das. Bailin Das has been remanded until the 27th by the Vanchiyoor Magistrate Court-11.
The police remand report states that the assault stemmed from Bailin’s anger at Shyamili for not objecting when one of her female colleagues at his office spoke out. He allegedly asked her, “Do you even know who you’re talking to?” before slapping her in the face. The report mentions that she suffered swelling and bruising from her chin to her eyebrows, and one side of her eye turned black.
The remand report strongly argued that granting the accused bail would be a denial of justice and could encourage others to commit similar acts. It also states that it would undermine the authority of the judiciary. An additional charge was filed against the accused related to the assault.
'Should be taken seriously'
The prosecution argued that the assault, having taken place in the workplace, should be viewed seriously, and bail should not be granted. They also stated that releasing the accused on bail might allow him to influence witnesses and disrupt the investigation. However, the defence claimed that the young lawyer provoked the incident and that the accused acted in a moment of sudden anger. The accused is currently being held in Poojappura District Jail.
