Rains batter state, thunderstorms likely; various districts warned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rains continue to batter various parts of the state. Yellow alert has been sounded in 12 districts. Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are on yellow alert.

Isolated heavy rain has been predicted. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) defines heavy rain as a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is received in 24 hours. Thunderstorms are expected.

Heavy rain will continue in the coming days. Orange alert has been issued in Kannur and Kasaragod tomorrow. Yellow alert has also been sounded in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

The National Centre for Oceanographic Studies and Research (INCOIS) has informed that there is a possibility of sea erosion due to high waves of 0.5 to 1.0 meters along the Kerala coast and 1.0 to 1.1 meters along the Kanyakumari coast till 08.30 tonight as part of the black sea phenomenon. The IMD has informed that fishing should not be done along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts till Monday. There is a possibility of strong winds and bad weather with a speed of 35 to 45 kmph and at times up to 55 kmph along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coasts.
