HARIPAD: Two people have been arrested in the case of robbing Rs 3 crore 24 lakh by stopping a parcel vehicle at Ramapuram Chepad on the national highway. Tiruppur natives Thirukumar (37) and Chandrabose (32) were arrested from their hometown itself. Seven people, including Satish and Durai Aras, who planned the robbery, are absconding. It will be clear how they knew that there was money in the lorry only after they are taken into custody.

The vehicle's registration was prepared and handed over by the arrested Thirukumar. Chandrabose was part of the robbery gang. Both were produced in the Haripad court and remanded.

The money that was given to a person named Appas Patil of Kollam by his relative in Coimbatore was stolen from a lorry of the parcel service 'Number One' at 4.30 am on the 13th. An eight-member gang that arrived in a Scorpio and an Innova stopped the lorry and stole the money. Then they drove to Tiruppur. An investigation conducted based on the CCTV footage found the number plate of the vehicle in which the thieves came, but the thieves changed the number plate as soon as they reached Tamil Nadu.

The accused were arrested under the leadership of Kayamkulam DySP N Babukuttan, CI J Nizamuddin, SI Brajith Lal, Nishad, Akhil, Iyas, Manikuttan, Shanavas, Deepak, Shahjahan, Siddique and Girish.

Planning in Coimbatore

All the thieves are from Tiruppur, Kumbakonam and Thiruvallur areas. The robbery was planned in Coimbatore. Durai Aras, who was among the thieves, is the leader of a national party's feeder organization. He also owns a textile industry in Kumbakonam. All of them are accused in similar cases. Thirukumar and Chandrabose were given Rs. 5 lakh out of the robbed money. Of this, they spent about Rs. 1.5 lakh at the Palani temple, the police said.
